Ambien (zolpidem) is most often prescribed for the treatment of insomnia. This is a hypnotic with sedative effects and it is usually taken for up to 10 days or a single dose. Make sure you plan to go to bed right after taking Ambien, as once you have taken it you will sleep for 7-8 hours. It's important that you should be ready to dedicate at least 7-8 hours to your sleep and avoid getting up before. While taking Ambien you will need to be very careful and use just the right amount prescribed. This drug has been reported to cause an addiction, and if you take it for longer than a week, withdrawal symptoms are possible. To avoid such symptoms as behavior changes, panic, anxiety, nausea, muscle cramps, stomach pain, vomiting, sweating, and seizure you will need to stop taking Ambien gradually. Never take more of this medicine than prescribed, as an overdose may be fatal. The following symptoms may indicate an overdose and will need to be reported directly to your health care provider: shallow breathing, light-headedness, confusion, fainting, and sleepiness.
